Celebrating Life of Pilot Connie Wolf at Chester County Balloon Festival

Connie Wolf’s life and accomplishments as a Pennsylvania balloon pilot, pioneer, and enthusiast will be recognized at the 13thAnnual Chester County Hot Air Balloon Festival, June 21-13 at the New Garden Flying Field in Toughkenamon, PA.

A founding member of the Balloon Club of America in 1952, Connie’s flights at first were out of Valley Forge Airport and later from Wings Field, practically next door to her home in Blue Bell, PA. She also flew overseas. Connie went on to set 15 world records in 1961. A vivacious lady, Connie’s life was full of adventure.

Deb Harding, director of the CCHA Balloon Festival, has arranged for Connie Wolf’s Blue Bellto be inflated at the festival, courtesy of the Franklin Institute which now owns the balloonConnie had the Blue Bell, featuring a silhouette of William Penn, manufactured to commemorate the 300thbirthday of Philadelphia in 1982.  What a nice co-incidence that this year, 2019, is William Penn’s 375thBirthday!

In addition, a team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh who are working on a book about Connie’s life will be on hand at the “pop-up” history tent. They are eager to collect and record stories about early era ballooning, ballooning history, and about Mrs. Wolf and her husband. If you happen to have any stories about Constance Wolf or General Alfred Wolf or any of Mrs. Wolf's ballooning adventures, stop on by! (And if you can't make it and still have stories to tell, email Tim Maddocks at timothy.madddocks@pitt.edu)

You’ll also have a chance to meet some balloonists who flew with Connie in years gone by. Once again the History of Ballooning exhibit will be hosting Eleanor Vadala, Michael Fairbanks, and Bob Sparks.

So join the adventure, both past and present!
